The West Virginia Fund for Law in the Public Interest (“The Fund”) is pleased to announce that the Pyles and Turner Foundation of Lewisburg, WV has awarded the Fund a $1500 grant in support of the Fund’s summer and post-graduate fellowship program for law students at the West Virginia University College of Law. The West Virginia Fund for Law in Public Interest is a non-profit organization that raises money to fund fellowships for WVU College of Law students to spend the summer working in public interest organizations throughout West Virginia. Founded in 1987, the fund seeks to help students gain a deeper understanding of the grave importance of public interest work. These students provide legal services to help low income West Virginians, including the elderly, the poor, children, and victims of domestic violence.
The Fund is very grateful to supporters like the Pyles and Turner Foundation whose generous donations help support the Fund’s work.
The Fund awards PIA fellowships annually to West Virginia College of Law students through a competitive selection process. Since its inception, over 350 students have received fellowships at public interest organizations. These include Legal Aid of West Virginia, Senior Legal Aid of West Virginia, Mountain State Justice, the Public Defender’s Office, Disability Rights of WV, ACLU of WV, the WVU College of Law Land Use and Sustainable Development Clinic, and ChildLaw Services, Inc. In the summer of 2019, the Fund has funded fellowships for 25 WVU College of Law students who worked in these public interest organizations full-time for 10 weeks.
Jennifer Powell, Executive Director of the West Virginia Fund for Law in the Public Interest notes, “The Pyles & Turner Foundation has been a generous supporter of the Fund for many years. Their grants help us create and support the next generation of public interest lawyers in West Virginia. These lawyers work tirelessly on behalf of the poor, victims of domestic violence, children, and others who cannot afford legal services.”
